Scott LLS FireFighter StairClimb

Every year, firefighters from all over the world compete in the Annual Scott LLS Firefighter Stairclimb. This unique race to the top of the Columbia Center in full combat gear and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is the largest individual firefighting competition in the world and 2016 saw $2.3 million raised to fund research and patient care for those suffering from blood cancers.

At 788 feet of vertical elevation, the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle stands as the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River. It takes 69 flights of stairs and 1,311 steps to reach the top. Firefighters outfitted with over 70 lbs. of gear sprint up to the top wearing SCBA breathing apparatus. The world record is just over an amazing 10 minutes and is held by a Missoula, Montana firefighter! Firefighters from Miles City Fire & Rescue competed for the 10th straight year in 2016.  Miles City Fire & Rescue has had top 5 and top 10 placings in the event over their 10 years of participation and 2016 saw 1,794 firefighters complete the climb.

The Scott LLS Firefighter Stairclimb supports the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and raises money through sponsorships, individual, and department fundraising. According to the Scott LLS Firefighter Stairclimb website, huge progress has been made in treating patients with blood cancers, with survival rates for many having doubled or tripled, and in some cases quadrupled, since LLS was founded in 1949. Yet, more than 1 million Americans are currently battling a blood cancer, which is the number 3 cause of cancer death, with leukemia alone causing more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every ten minutes someone dies.
